Could you share a bit about your organization or university, including your role in the ZOOOM project? What expertise does your team bring to the table?
VTT is a visionary research and innovation partner for companies and society. VTT is one of Europe’s leading research institutions. We are owned by the Finnish state. We advance the utilisation and commercialisation of research and technology in commerce and society. Our team ‘Data Intensive Economy’ focuses on the business-, legal- and ecosystem-aspects relating to data sharing of tomorrow. We are the lead of WP2 and participate widely also in other tasks. Our aim in ZOOOM is to narrow the gap between business- and legal-aspects relating to 3Os, with the special focus on data.
What motivated you to join the ZOOOM project? What aspects of the project resonated with your goals or interests?
ZOOOM has provided us a way to use our teams expertise in a wide manner, from the perspectives of business, legal and ecosystemic. The goal of ZOOOM to provide support in the form of practical tools, is also in the core aims of our team.
Looking back, what do you consider the key achievements of the ZOOOM project so far? How has your organization benefited from being part of this initiative?
Main achievements for us has been the generation of the ZOOOM licensing framework that combines business-, legal- and social aspects. Another achievement is the generation of visual tools to aid users to understand 3Os.
How do you see the future of open source in the EU, particularly in terms of technological innovation, legal frameworks, and social or economic impacts? What challenges or gaps do you think still need to be addressed?
Open source is a phenomenon that is here and will remain. However, as the technological landscape changes, e.g. AI, the traditional way to operate open source software will no longer apply as it used to be. For instance, the role of data in the open source communities will increase. This poses additional challenges and requires also rethinking of what is open source.
