ZOOOM invites you to ‘Open Source AI: Risks and Opportunities’ Event

What is the event about?

  • When? 12 December 2023, 15.00 – 17.00 CET
  • Where? Online (via BigBlueButton Platform)
  • Who? Anyone who is interested in open source and AI

European companies increasingly rely on collaborative ecosystems where open innovation is a key business tenet. In this event, we focus on the competitive advantages of using and developing open technologies for business growth and sustainability, particular in the field of AI. In two sessions, the meeting focuses on the use case of open source AI.

The first part offers a gentle introduction into the dominant forms of open innovation in AI, what it means for AI to be open and the business, regulatory and organisational advantages of open source AI. We touch upon some of the relevant provisions on open source components, transparency, data disclosure and generative AI in the upcoming AI Act, the text and data mining exception in European copyright law, and the emerging business models around open source AI.

The second part is a panel discussion with experts from the community of open source AI companies, platforms, and developers. In this part, we are going to focus on opportunities but also common pitfalls and fallacies concerning open source AI and the alleged advantages of proprietary models. We’ll touch upon the role of regulatory sandboxes in incentivising open source AI development and facilitating access to data.

Both sessions offer ample room for discussion and are aimed at knowledge generators, such as individual developers, starting companies, SMEs, as well as supporting organisations interested in how to approach the challenges of open source AI from a regulatory perspective.
