VTT ProperTune® is an Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) concept that uses multiscale modelling for optimal computational material design. With VTT ProperTune® one can virtually create microstructurally accurate materials and load in realistic conditions – whatever the material, whatever the challenge. It can replace expensive, time-consuming testing and shorten the time-to-market for new products by an average of 50%.
ICME provides a systematic, requirement-based design approach and digital framework for material discovery, design and optimisation using AI/ML technologies. VTT ProperTune® enables the rapid development and deployment of ICME solutions. This is achieved by using multiscale modelling and computational material design approaches such as the Process-Structure-Properties-Performance (PSPP) principle.

VTT ProperTune® is the result of long research and development efforts. It is in the phase of deciding its open source strategies and policies. VTT ProperTune® combines modelling with software library development (used for the modelling). Certain, limited functionalities are offered as open source software. In addition to open source software components, it contains a broad variety of linked and/or closed assets (e.g., confidential information, trade secrets, knowledge, capabilities, computational capacities).
From the community perspective, VTT ProperTune® can be regarded as an initiator of an ecosystem combining open source software development, project initiatives and academic research. Therefore, several different business models, covering the goals and activities of the whole ecosystem needs to be taken into account.
